Aullidos en el silencio
Allá por el año 332 después de Cristo, en la población de Thagaste en el norte de África, hoy en día Argelia a unos 100 km de la ciudad de Cartago.
Por el aquel entonces Cartago era una importante ciudad de la Antigüedad, fundada por los fenicios procedentes de Tiro localidad situada en un enclave costero del norte de África, a 17 km de la actual ciudad de Túnez.
Cartago era la capital mas próspera de la república, viéndose enriquecida por los recursos provenientes de todo el Mediterráneo occidental. Cartago fue durante mucho tiempo una ciudad con más futuro y rica que Roma. Durante su apogeo llegó a tener 400 000 habitantes, edificios de hasta siete pisos de altura, un sistema de alcantarillado unificado y docenas de baños públicos.
En la provincia de Souk Ahras ( ولاية سوق أهراس ) es una provincia de Argelia.
En tiempos de Roma fue conocida como Thagaste y estuvo habitada por los bereberes. Fue el lugar de nacimiento de San Agustín y uno de los lugares donde este importante personaje histórico vivió y estudió.
Su capital es la ciudad de Souk Ahras, otras ciudades de esta provincia son Sedrata y Khemissa.
Thagaste fue un asentamiento de los pueblos beréberes.
En aquella región del norte de África, donde las personas eran sumamente agresivas, posiblemente por causa del clima seco, caluroso y agreste entrañando dificultades para el desenvolvimiento de una sociedad.

Mónica nace en Thagaste actualmente Argelia. Sus padres la educaron en el cristianismo y la casaron con un hombre mayor pagano llamado Patricius, un hombre muy enérgico y de temperamento violento.
Mónica iba a la iglesia cada día y soportó con paciencia el adulterio y las cóleras de su marido. Se ganó el afecto de su suegra en poco tiempo logro convertir a Patricius al cristianismo y calmó su violencia. Mónica tuvo tres hijos. Uno de ellos fue San Agustín.
San Agustín nació el 13 de noviembre del año 354 d.C, en Thagaste, pequeña ciudad de Numidia en el África romana. Su padre, llamado Patricius, era un pequeño propietario pagano y su madre, Santa Mónica, es puesta por la Iglesia como ejemplo de "mujer cristiana", de piedad y bondad probadas, madre abnegada y preocupada siempre por el bienestar de su familia, aún bajo las circunstancias más adversas.
Agustín fue un niño mas que inteligente y con alguna otra cualidad fuera de lo común que guardaba en secreto del resto de la familia y sus conciudadanos de Thagaste.
Patricio y Mónica se habían dado cuenta de que Agustín era extraordinariamente inteligente, y por eso decidieron enviarle a la capital del estado, a Cartago ha estudiar filosofía, literatura y oratoria.
